Standardization Manifesto
Precision Measurement Standards
Standardized tolerance benchmarks for seam allowances, shrinkage factors, and dual Imperial/Metric calculations.
1. Standard Seam Allowances Used Across All Blueprints
| Crafting Application | Standard Seam Allowance | Pressing Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Quilt Top Piecing | 1/4 Inch (6.35 mm) — Scant 1/4″ | Press toward the darker fabric (or nested) |
| Quilt Backing Assembly | 1/2 Inch (12.7 mm) | Press seam allowance OPEN to minimize bulk |
| Garment & Bag Construction | 3/8 to 1/2 Inch (9.5 to 12.7 mm) | Press open or finish with French seams |
| Pillowcase French Seams | 1/4″ First Pass, 3/8″ Second Pass | Fully encases raw fraying edges |
2. Width of Fabric (WOF) Assumptions
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all fabric cutting charts assume a Usable Width of Fabric (WOF) of 42 inches (from a standard 44″–45″ bolt with selvages removed).
3. Pre-Wash Shrinkage Tolerances
- 100% Quilting Cotton: 3% to 5% shrinkage after hot wash / tumble dry.
- Cotton-Linen Blends: 5% to 8% shrinkage.
- Cotton Flannel: 7% to 10% shrinkage.
4. Decimal to Fractional Yardage Quick Conversion Chart
| Inches | Fractional Yards | Decimal Yards | Metric (Centimeters) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5″ | 1/8 Yard | 0.125 yd | 11.4 cm |
| 9.0″ | 1/4 Yard | 0.250 yd | 22.9 cm |
| 13.5″ | 3/8 Yard | 0.375 yd | 34.3 cm |
| 18.0″ | 1/2 Yard | 0.500 yd | 45.7 cm |
| 27.0″ | 3/4 Yard | 0.750 yd | 68.6 cm |
| 36.0″ | 1 Full Yard | 1.000 yd | 91.4 cm |
